How much is a website design? I hate the answer.

I am a designer but I hate it when people say "Well it depends". It does to a certain point. I have been designing so many websites over the years and just by looking at the requirements I can give a ball park.

$15/hosting (our hosting services is like all you can eat Seafood buffet)
Website design starts at $195 plus $90 per additional page. For all estimates over $600 we offer 20% discount.
If I do EXTRA for a customer, it is not a BIG DEAL!!! Our customers feed us. Literally!!!! They stop by our office and bring scones or chips (btw healthy ones - all grain :)) or stop by every time they are on the way to Starbucks.
We have a number of customers who bring their parents, in-laws or kids to introduce them to us.

So we do extra work for our customers, but we are on the first name basis and when they say JUMP we say "How high?".

Does your website work on all the browsers?

Do you know how many people are using Internet explorer (IE)? Or Firefox? or Safari?

Well it should not matter. A lot designers built websites working properly in IE, you probably have seen those messages at the bottom of the home page "Best viewed in Internet Explorer 8" or "Best viewed in 1024x768 resolution". It is easy. You just make it work for the owner of the website but who cares about the rest. I think it is very narrow minded:

You loose a lot of customers who might not be able to see your website or everything is so crooked so it is just a big turn off
Did check who your target audience actually is? I did a website once and the designer designed a flash interactive map, which is cool BUT the website was for people with disabilities and none of their software could actually read flash the same way google would not be able to read yours.

There are so many options to make your website both cool and very very user friendly.

Does Your Website Make Money?

Well, this is my first article. I have been doing website design since 2002 and you can tell that the way people see it these days is different than 6 years ago.

It is very important to make sure that your website does what is was paid for. It is the same form of advertising as any piece of advertising. Do you know what is the return on your investment?

You can have thousands of people visiting your website but if the only thing they do is hit the BACK button then something has to be done.

So what do you do to increase the return on your investment:

Get the load off the home page: remove videos or heavy images of the home page. People get turned off if it takes for ever to load the home page
Bullets, bullets, bullets. People like lists. 3 page well written text .... do you ever read those long pages?
Put the most important information on the home page, straight to the point.
Choose the right colors for your website. Yes it is important. I designed a website for a vet clinic and one thing they brought to my attention is not to use pastel colors because people associate those colors with euthanasia. So make sure your designer is on top of the game.

Our web design company adds all of those features(and more) as part of the website development, at no extra charge. The bar is raised and to do the bare minimum for the customers does not cut it anymore. Demand from your website designer to get on moving and give you an opportunity to have a chance to compete on the web.
